Sculptor Auguste Rodin was fortunate to have his secretary Rainer Maria Rilke, one of the most sensitive poets of our time. These two pieces discussing Rodin's work and development as an artist are as revealing of Rilke as they are of his subject. Written in 1902 and 1907, these essays mark the entry of the poet into the world of letters. Rilke's description of Rodin reveals the profound

Rilke and Hofmannsthal took great inspiration from Rodin, which is reflected in their work and in the history of the small bronze. What is special about this exhibition curated by Maria Obenaus and Ralph Gleis is that, for the first time, a less prominent work of Rodin from the Nationalgalerie’s collection is explored from different angles.

At the Rodin Museum, I find students drawin g Rilke to Lou Andreas-Salomè Berlino‒Westend Oberneuland bei Bremen, 8 august 1903 When I first came to Rodin and lunched with him out there in Meudon with people to whom one was not introduced, at the same table with strangers, I knew that his house was nothing to him, a paltry little necessity perhaps, a roof for time of rain and sleep; and that it was no care to him and no weight upon 2016-12-14 2016-08-31 Rilke and Rodin, it turns out, cared about each other in strange ways. The relationship between the master sculptor and the pupil poet, we learn, was both tempestuous and tranquil. Rodin was born in 1840. Rilke was 35 years younger. Rilke drifted into Rodin's orbit like a straw moving into a whirlpool.

“Rodin was at the height of his power when he let this unknown author into his life; Rilke would first become his student who was wandering around, and three years later he would become his most trusted assistant.

These two pieces discussing Rodin’s work and development as an artist are as revealing of Rilke as they are of his subject.

All the while, Rilke recorded every succinct and witty word he heard from his master, then forwarded them to Kappus. At the time, Rilke was twenty-seven years old and Rodin, sixty-two. This gave Rilke the opportunity to confront and describe the powerful and expressive sculptures of Rodin. Rilke’s essay on Rodin and his work remains one of the best accounts of the sculptor’s working process and is among the most penetrating interpretations of his art.

Rodin taught him the value of objective observation and, under this influence, Rilke dramatically transformed his poetic style from the subjective and sometimes incantatory language of his earlier work into something quite new in European literature.
